The 25th ACPSS International Conference
美国华人人文社科教授协会第二十五届国际会议
In Collaboration with Portland State University and Confucius Institute at Portland State University
September 27-29, 2019
Portland State University
Portland, Oregon, U.S.A.
General Theme: Challenges and Opportunities in the Midst of Sino-US Political and Economic Tensions (美中政治经济紧张局势下的挑战和机遇)
China and United States are two giants in the east and the west. According to “U.S. Relations with China (1949-2018)”, the Sino-US “relationships have evolved from tense standoffs to a complex mix of intensifying diplomacy, growing international rivalry, and increasingly intertwined economies.” Politically and economically, the United States considers China a threat to US national security when China pursues its ‘China Dream’ and tries to build a ‘new type of great powers relationship with the U.S.’. With intensified trade war between the two countries, the tensions of the two giants have been escalated, which has affected a broad range of areas such as cultural exchange, peaceful collaboration, and intellectual mutual respect. Nevertheless, challenges and opportunities coexist, and it will be critical to examine both in the midst of political and economic tensions. Therefore, the 2019 annual conference of the Association of Chinese Professors of Social Sciences in the United States invites papers and panels that focus on, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Political and Economic Reform (政治和经济改革)
- Educational Reform and Development (教育改革与发展)

The 23rd ACPSS International Conference
美国华人人文社科教授协会第二十三届国际会议
In Collaboration with High Point University
October 20-22, 2017
High Point University
High Point, North Carolina, U.S.A.
General Theme: Coping with the Challenge of Globalization
Globalization in the last two decades or so has produced seismic changes in our world. These changes include, on one hand, the phenomenal economic growth in countries such as China and India and the economic disarray in Western countries and, on the other hand, drastic income polarization in many countries even though their GDPs have multiplied. This growing economic maladjustment has also triggered problems ranging from polarized public opinion, social unrest, and racial tension to political instability. At the same time, uneven progress in the age of globalization has raised questions about the validity of the international order that came into existence at the end of World War II. The growing tension between the West and Non-Western worlds, the dispute over the South China Sea, and the imminent trade war between the US and China, etc. suggests the coming of a period of uncertainty and instability. All these unprecedented developments pose a grave challenge to scholars in social sciences and the humanities as well as political leaders all over the world. It is indeed a time that calls for serious reflections, constructive ideas and frank and honest exchanges among people from different cultures and countries. The 2017 annual meeting of the Association of Chinese Professors of Social Sciences in the United States therefore invites papers and panels that focus on, but not limited to the following themes.
- Impact of globalization
- Understanding of and teaching about globalization in the classroom
- Globalization of education
- Human, cultural and environmental costs of high speed economic growth
- Immigration, Migration in the age of globalization
- New ideas in saving mother earth
- Globalization and national identity
- Managing US-China relations in the age of growing economic competition
- How to avoid the Thucydides Trap between China and the U.S.?
- Relevance of the humanities in an increasingly materialistic world
- Crucial role of international/cross-cultural dialogues
- Economic modernization and political reform
- Global community in the age of mass media and instant news
